“Draw, Antonio, Draw, and Don’t Waste Time” - Michelangelo and Figure Drawing

Ah, Michelangelo—if only we could all have a wise old master shouting timeless advice at us while we sketch. "Draw, Antonio, draw, and don’t waste time!" he bellowed at his apprentice, Antonio Mini. These words reflect his strong belief in the importance of drawing practice, especially figure drawing. It's like he's saying, “Hey, kid, quit scrolling through your Renaissance version of Instagram and get back to the basics!”
I've been a figure drawing devotee since my senior year of high school when I was lucky enough to score a scholarship to study at the Des Moines Art Center. I was an Art & Design major who knew that mastering the human form was crucial. But then life happened. After college, I swapped my sketchbook for spreadsheets, focused on raising a family as a single parent, and climbed the IT executive ladder.
In the realm of art, time holds a unique significance. It can be a muse, an adversary, or simply an observer of our creative endeavors. For me, time took the form of a 35-year hiatus from the world of paints, brushes, and canvases. A hiatus that far surpasses the duration of Michelangelo's legendary lunch breaks.
About 10 years ago, I decided it was time to return to my artistic roots. I dove back into watercolor painting and figure drawing—back to basics! Now in retirement, I’m doubling down on these core skills, while also playing around with new tools, media, and styles. Because why not? If Picasso could go through a Blue Period, I can have my Watercolor Comeback Era.
Emerging Artists and Modern Trends
These days, emerging artists are exploring an abundance of creative avenues that stretch far beyond traditional figure drawing. Contemporary art trends lean heavily towards conceptual works, digital media, and abstraction. It seems like everyone’s ditching the sketchbook for a tablet, experimenting with techniques that would make Michelangelo’s head spin faster than a potter’s wheel.
Art education has also broadened its horizons, incorporating digital art and multimedia. While this is fantastic, it often means that less time is spent on classical skills like figure drawing. The contemporary art market, hungry for innovation and originality, nudges artists to explore unique styles that might not prioritize traditional figure drawing. It's like trying to balance a career in rocket science while ignoring the basics of gravity.
The Big Picture: Why Figure Drawing Still Matters
So, what happens when traditional figure drawing takes a backseat? Potentially, a lot. Figure drawing hones essential skills like observation, anatomy, and proportion—skills that are the bedrock of various artistic disciplines. Ignoring these basics might lead to a loss of technical proficiency, making artworks feel shallow and less detailed.
Moreover, the absence of a shared foundation in figure drawing could widen the gap between classical and contemporary art forms. Without these skills, artists might struggle to blend historical techniques with modern styles, leading to a fragmented art world where traditional skills and their relevance fade over time. It's like trying to build a house without a solid foundation—eventually, it all comes tumbling down.
The Cyclical Nature of Art
But here’s the thing about art trends—they’re notoriously cyclic. Today’s neglected skill could be tomorrow’s hottest trend. Remember when bell-bottoms made a comeback? The same could happen with figure drawing. I’m hopeful that this is just a temporary lull and that soon enough, figure drawing will be back in vogue, complete with its essential techniques and timeless appeal.
What Do You Think?
So, what’s your take on all this? Are we really moving away from traditional figure drawing, or is it simply evolving with the times? Can the fundamentals coexist with modern innovation, or are we destined to choose one over the other? Let’s get a lively discussion going in the comments. Remember, no matter where you stand on this debate, art should always be fun—even if it involves a bit of existential angst and the occasional spilled paint.
